Bringing Hans Fallada to light again...

LISTEN ON : www.abc.net.au

THE TORTUROUS LIFE OF GERMAN AUTHOR HANS FALLADA

Broadcast : Sunday March 24 - 2013

German author Hans Fallada may not be a familiar name but he's often described as one of the great German writers of the first half of the 20th century. He was a tortured writer who struggled with depression and substance abuse. He died in 1947 at the age of 54.

During the Nazi period, he was a conflicted figure, sometimes incurring the wrath of the Nazis, sometimes seeming to dance to their tune.

Hans Fallada is now finding a voice in the Anglophone world with the republication of his works in English nearly 80 years after they were written. Three of his novels are being published in Australia for the first time: Little Man, What Now?,A Wolf Among Wolves and The Drinker.
